When Silent Love met with Boasting Vanity

A long time ago
I got used to living with
My open wounds,
The last withered while
I was staring at the sunset
In the middle of the fog.

Yes, you told me so many times
About your suffering,
How your heart shrunk
Fisted in bleeding red
While your eyes tasted
The salt of the ocean waves
And crystal pearls were running
Down your cheeks.

On that plane you felt
The freezing coldness
Where just one thing
Would not freeze:
The fountain of your tears.

Yes, indeed I remember
All the pain on that plane.
You sent me back to the
Land of rejection.

Yet I am a resilient rock
With my withered wounds
That I carry since ancient times
On this eroded earth.

But to exist is to resist
And so I dwell in human hearts
Who care for each other.
And may I receive your boasting waves
Crashing on my shores
Those hearts will restore me again
For I am silent love and not vain.

  1. This is equal measures of beautiful and sad, those withered empathic wounds in contrast to the egocentric wounds of the other… I like it how the silent love is soothed in the ending by those hearts that are actually caring. To have someone bear witness to your pain, and not run from it or be blinded by their own pain, that is healing. Lovely poem.

  2. Oh Marta, I read this piece with many emotions, the poem is superbly crafted suffering and the joy of release. The imagery throughout is exquisite, and these lines imprinted with feelings
    “Where just one thing
    Would not freeze:
    The fountain of your tears.”

  3. Your Poem touches my heart. It tells a story only a few understand, sad happiness or a happy sadness. It’s a silent song the heart feels. ‘Staring at the sunset, in the middle of the fog,’ and ‘I am silent and not vain.’ The numbing pain of a hallow emptiness, you’ve worded the feeling perfectly.

“I think the saddest people always try their hardest to make people happy because they know what it’s like to feel absolutely worthless and they don’t want anyone else to feel like that.” – Robin Williams.

So I agree, “dwell in human hearts who care for each other.” Beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing. 🙂

  4. wow, marta! the imagery that is employed is so beautiful. and the thing about your poems which i personally like the most is, that they are always arranged quite well.

this plane of suffering on which you both are seated and how you selflessly hear the other person’s sorrow, i mean how are you able to achieve such a perfection in your poems? i absolutely love it.

  5. The sadness and melancholy of a love rejected come through beautifully. Yet the will to stand and move forward takes this poem to a different level. The wish to see the vanity come crashing shows that the wound of rejection has not healed yet. Well done Marta.

I am more accustomed to the spelling “crystal” than “cristal”, so stopped for a moment while reading.

  6. This is Wonderful dialogue between the two.
The love and pain expressed is commendable.
    An eternal patience depicted.
The three, Sun, Earth and the Poet seem to understand each other and life goes on.
Giving all assurances to restore again in each others’ Hearts.
Is that what you want to say Marta.

  7. This is such a powerful and profound piece, Marta! The strength you convey in knowing that the rejection does not mean the end of you is just amazing. I have to say my favorite line was “but to exist is to resist”. The fact that we’re alive in all our pain and emotional suffering proves that we are fighters in life. We resisted the negativity and pushed through. I love how inspiring and uplifting this poem is, my friend. Simply beautiful! ♥️
